Depending on your genetics, this d-l form of phenylalanine may be more effective than l-phenylalanine; you may have to experiment to see which works best for you. I always take individual amino acids like this on an empty stomach for best results; but PLEASE be diligent and do your own in-depth research before taking any amino acid or other supplement. Anyone with PKU should AVOID taking any form (d-, l-, or d-l) phenylalanine. Anyone on prescription medications of any kind should consult their medical advisor before adding any supplement to their program, in my opinion.Personally, I like TwinLab supplements because they usually have very few fillers & all TwinLab supplements I've tried have seemed to be of excellent quality. This is a 500 mg DLPA (a lower dose than some brands), which I prefer, since I can adjust the dose to my needs. Typically, I only take this particular supplement first thing in the morning, and only when needed for muscle soreness or an occasional energy boost. Highly recommended!P.S. Here are two great books on the subject that are must-haves, in my opinion, for anyone wanting to learn more about the variety of health-enhancing uses for amino acids and other supplements: The Healing Nutrients Within: Facts, Findings, and New Research on Amino Acids and Julia Ross's classic The Mood Cure: The 4-Step Program to Take Charge of Your Emotions--Today. And here's another priceless reference book, in my opinion: Orthomolecular Medicine for Everyone: Megavitamin Therapeutics for Families and Physicians. Just leave a comment & I'll be happy to help you, if I can. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Patience is a virtue with this product! *by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2016* After reading up DLPA, I bought this as a trial experiment to see if it would help with chronic osteoarthritic pain from a long-ago car accident. DLPA is also supposed to help with depression, and as anyone dealing with pain knows, it's a real mood killer! I am currently taking bromelain and 5-HTP which helps a lot, but hey, if something is even more effective, I'll try it. After 3 weeks of taking over 2,000 mg of this supplement a day, it did not seem to be working for pain for me, but I figured I would finish the bottle. I will say that it seems to help with sleep; while I've been taking it, I didn't need the 5-HTP, which I take before going to bed. I notice that that worrisome thoughts that usually keep me awake are less noticeable with this. When I had to discontinue my bromelain after breaking a blood vessel in my hand, (bromelain thins the blood), I noticed that the pain was not that noticeable, so the DLPA had to be working. When I added the bromelain back, however, it did not make a huge improvement overall, which is what I hoped the combination would do. I'm not going to use the DLPA on a regular basis, because I like other things about bromelain, but I will keep the DLPA on hand as an alternative to NSAIDs. I would give this product 3.5 stars, although for someone who was willing to take larger doses it might be worth it. I did some more research as to effective dosage for pain and some people need to take up to 3 or 4 thousand mg per day, which I would never be able to do with these rather large capsules, plus it should be taken on an empty stomach. If it came in a higher dosage or a smaller pill, I might stick with it but the highest DLPA dosage I've seen is 750 mg capsules, so you would still be taking quite a few. I found an article by Dr. Weil which noted he no longer recommends DLPA, but suggests using extract of turmeric standardized to 90 to 95 percent curcuminoids instead, because it helps so many other health issues. Anyway, this product by Twinlab is definitely high quality and a good buy, so it's worth a try. For those who are looking for pain relief, just be aware that you need both D and L forms of phenylalanine; for depression, you can use the L form alone. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars It's not like a caffeine jolt *by K***C on Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2015* These pills really seem to work as far as mood and energy. It's not like a caffeine jolt, but a calm, positive, upbeat attitude kind of energy. I am so glad I found this. One thing to note is that you should not take this with another protein (food, shake or otherwise). Best on empty stomach an hour before protein intake. Effectiveness can be increased with a good B complex. One con is that the pills are very large horse pills. If you have a problem swallowing pills, large capsules you might think twice about this large tablet. Otherwise, there is a coating on it to help get it down. I haven't experienced and problems. Good stuff. So glad I found it.
