I have thoroughly tested the product to the best of my ability before posting this review.The PlayBulb Rainbow was originally launched as a Kickstarter project and gained a lot of traction from funders. And rightfully so, it's a fantastic and unique idea rivalled only by the pricey Phillips Hue Smart Bulbs.Like the PlayBulb Candle, the PlayBulb Rainbow uses a smartphone app to control the brightness and colour of the output from the bulb. It uses Bluetooth wireless connectivity to connect to your device, and since its the latest standard of Bluetooth you can connect to multiple PlayBulbs at any given time.Features:- Bluetooth connectivity- Claimed 60 days battery life with 4 hours p/day operation- Recreate any colour ambient light- 280 Lumens- E27/E26 screw cap- 5W inputEveryday UsageThe PlayBulb Rainbow works well as a conventional lightbulb. Unlike the PlayBulb Candle, brightness was not as much an issue. 280 Lumens is not incredibly bright, but enough to light up a small bedroom.It was best to leave the light switch on and then toggle the bulb on and off from the smartphone application. This made it ideal for getting in to bed with the light on and then turn the bulb off from the comfort of your sheets.Bluetooth ConnectivityIf you do not have a compatible smartphone (Android or iOS and Bluetooth) you will not be able to use the PlayBulb Rainbow. This is not a down vote, since most people who purchase this will be getting it for that exact reason. The bulb uses smartphone Bluetooth 4.0 technology which consumes very little power when in standby mode too.From the mobile application, you connect to the candle via Bluetooth and can control the colour, brightness and type of illumination. The colour is chosen from a colour wheel and the brightness is adjusted using a slider. There is also an entire tab dedicated to how you want the light to be recreated and the options include a candle effect which adds some flicker to the bulb or a flashing/SOS output too.Mobile AppThe mobile app is available as a free download from the respective iOS and Android store. I tested the PlayBulb Rainbow with an iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 and encountered no issues at all. It was simple to connect to the bulb for the first time, and controlling the light was incredibly easy. There's a huge bunch of options and featured that can be controlled via the application; all laid out and organised very well. Children and older, less-tech-friendly adults will have no issues using the PlayBulb Rainbow bulb.Color RecreationI think the PlayBulb Rainbow does a super job in recreating colours. When using the smartphone app, colours change instantly are are fairly accurate too. With that being said, white is very dim and is closer to a yellow-ish cream tint.CompatibilityMy only problem here is compatibility. The variant I was sent for review uses an E27 screw which I have found to be rare in most households. I did't find a choice of choosing the supplied cap, and in order to use the bulb many people would also need to take in to account the cost of an adapter to convert the E27 fitting.ConclusionI think the PlayBulb Rainbow is a great addition to any room in the house. Whether you use it as a night-light in your bedroom, a candle-light in the living room or an ambience light to create atmosphere in the kitchen or bathroom it does a fantastic job.After pairing and use both the Candle and the Rainbow at the same time I truly appreciated the value of the MiPow PlayBulb range. It was surreal being able to control the atmosphere in my room with the touch of a button.
