Not a bad piece of kit

I bought this purely to try out on my Citroen Xantia HDI along with my cheap Android tablet that has Bluetooth internally. My engine warning light has never come on in 10 years but I have friends who aren't so lucky and in one case they paid out 50 quid just for an inspection and reset of the ECU.I took a quick look at the mini cd that came with the OBD but was no too impressed with the programs and drivers so did not use it at all. I downloaded a free version app from Google Playstore called OBD Car Doctor and then paired the unit with my tablet using the code 1234. It took about 3 minutes to connect fully at first but now just does it in 30 seconds. The info given is first class although I am running a diesel so certain items such as spark plugs do not respond but I am pretty confident that should my very reliable car ever comes up with a fault it should show where and what it is and allow me to reset if it is just a hiccup in the ECU.The one and only problem I have is the OBD socket connection on my car is situated inside the fuse box just under the dashboard on the extreme left and when it is open, the door of it covers my accelerator pedal. The scan tool sticks out too far for me to be able to close it so I may have to detach the entire door or reposition the socket so I can test it whilst under driving conditions which I have yet to do. I have noticed there are other types of OBD scanners that have the connections on the sides and not at the ends so it would not stick out so much but for the amount of times I am looking to use this on my own car buying another one because of this does not make sense.Just one more niggle. It took 5 weeks for this to get to me which meant a friend of mine whose Vauxhall had it light on I originally ordered it for was sold as it was and he lost £200 on the sale. Although it came all the way from Hong Kong they should have used a plane and not a donkey to transport it.

    Bluetooth OBD II tool

All modern cars have computers and sensors to keep them running efficiently and safely, all grand if it's working fine... but if something is going wrong or there is a fault most of us ship our tin boxes off to the local garage or stealership for fixing without really knowing the diagnosis. Now just to explain, I'm probably the most Sceptical man in the world, I hate taking somebody's word for anything... (and a bit tight...) so when I roll one of my cars off for any work to be done I like to know that I'm not being taken for a ride.I bought this scanner to detect and clear the error codes on my VW Beetle and just a to keep an eye on my Renault Espace Mk IV as it acted a bit strange on a long trip last year and I just wanted a way of seeing what was going on in case it done it again.I also have a USB one but this is must more useful as you can take the car for a run and watch in real time on your phone/tablet etc without having to strap your laptop to the passenger seat.I have been using an android phone(ICS)and tablet (honeycomb) and using the free Torque app. I still cant get my phone to hook up with blue tooth but my tablet works a treat.. I will have a go with a an apple phone and report later. Not even looked at the supplied diskI tried both cars now, I cleared down the error on the beetle and on both cars in real time it gave a multitude of information (engine temp, intake air volume etc... that can be displayed as numbers, meters or graphs so if you have a doubt on sensor it will all become clear very quickly. So impressed with this little gadget just have one in the glove box for under a tenner.. nice free app ( apple users I expect it will cost you. as you lot like paying for everything :-))Could get you the nod on whats going on or just for nosing around under the bonnet without getting your hands greasy..

After some problems on first connection now works reliably

*by P***H on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on 14 July 2014*

After paying quite a lot more for an OBD scanner that wouldn't connect to Bluetooth on my Android phone (got my money back on that one), decided I would buy the cheapest I could find - so this one. Plugged it in to my Honda Accord and it connected to Bluetooth fine (code 1234) but then using Torque Pro app it seemed to have some problems finding a protocol and dropping the Bluetooth connection. However, I left it connected as I looked up if I had done something wrong - decided I hadn't and then lo-and-behold when I looked again it had connected to the ECU and all was working... I have tried it a few times since and it connects reliably every time now in a few seconds and stays connected while driving around. Haven't tried resetting any fault codes (as I don't have any) but Torque Pro picks up on all the available ECU data through this device in real time. Moral of the story - if you are having problems with this connecting to the ECU at the outset leave it for a while and have a cup of coffee and see if it sorts itself out and finds the right protocol (set to "Thorough Search" in Torque Pro).
