Review: Essential - A must in my opinion for any aquarium enthusiast with a planted tank. This provides some necessary nutrition for water borne plants and helps with healthy growth. Since using my plants have been flourishing and lots of healthy growth which means happy fish. Lasts quite a while for me as only have a small tank. As the plants flourish they compete with algae for nutrients and then causes algae to decline.
Review: You need to understand what it is and how it works... - I know lots of people rave about this stuff and others hate it, and obviously I can only speak from my own personal experience (and I don't for a second claim to be any kind of expert!), but I have been using this in my low tech, low light setup for over a year now and have seen good results. The main thing to know and understand about this product is that this is NOT liquid CO2! It gets called liquid CO2 all the time, but that's more of a casual term rather than an accurate description. (Liquid CO2 only exists at very high pressures which obviously can't exist in a soft plastic bottle) What this actually IS, is quite a potent and potentially very harmful chemical (if not dosed properly) which over the course of about 24 hours in your tank, goes through a molecular change to 'become' carbon that your plants can then utilise for further growth. (I can't pretend to know or understand the whole science involved, but there are some very informative videos on YouTube explaining this process in detail 🤓). Because its only safe to dose this in relatively small amounts it means that you're going to be limited to the amount of carbon you're going to be able to add to your system over any given period. Therefore, I've found its only really helpful when you're trying to grown relatively easy, low CO2 demanding plants rather than anything that requires high levels of CO2 (like a lot of carpeting plants for example). If that's what you want, you're gonna need to look at the high tech approach... Coupled with low lights, I've found that I'm getting good healthy slow growth of plants like anubias, desertcart swords, jungle val, and bacopa. Also (with dosing it sensibly), I've not had any problems with it effecting my shrimp or snails 👍 Also, over time, this chemical acts as a very effective anti-algae additive- some people use it just for that- but that is OVER TIME! Don't over dose your tank on it trying to get rid of the stuff! (Or you'll kill everything! Not just the algae... 😵🤣) Anyway, hope this helps! ✌

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What causes this product to kill algae, and does it kill anything else (like beneficial bacteria)?**
A: I bought the Seachem Flourish Excel because it seems to be the best solution to a Black Beard Algae problem I'm having, and after studying what it does, and how it does it, I too was worried about the Beneficial Bacteria in my 2 large canister filters.Couldn't find a direct answer to that question, so I sent an e-mail directly to Seachem Laboratories. Here is my question to them and their reply......
Message: I have a 72 gal heavily planted community tank and am having an outbreak of Black Beard Algae. I purchased your product as it seems the best solution to the problem, but I need a question answered before I can use your product. I now understand how your product works, but will this product also kill off the Beneficial Bacteria inside the Seachem Matrix Bio-Media of my 2 large canister filters?! Crashing the cycle in my tank is not an option. Is this product (Flourish Excel) safe to use for the bacteria that maintains the nitrogen cycle of my tank, or will it kill the bacteria in my filter media along with the Black Beard Algae and crash the nitrogen cycle of my tank? Need a straight answer, please, Thank You

Hi there, thanks for reaching out!
No, Excel will not affect your biological filtration if dosed appropriately.
 Hope this helps!
Seachem Support 10304
Needless to say, I am very relieved, and pleased. Now I can start the process of getting rid of that Black Beard Algae and not worry about crashing my nitrogen cycle. 2 Thumbs Up to Seachem Laboratories!

**Q: are they copper free?**
A: No. They contain 0.001% copper. Though people have used them in shrimp tanks without a problem, others have had shrimp die, particularly if the tablet got stirred up from the substrate (rescaping, fish burrowing, etc). If there's a chance of your substrate being disturbed, I'd recommend going with API Root Tabs instead, as they do not contain copper.

**Q: How I use this for my tank 20 gallons**
A: Per the instructions:
"On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL."
1 cap = 5ml
1 cap for every 50 gallon equates to 1 ml for every 10 gallons or 2 ml for 20 gallons.

**Q: Is the product compatible with freshwater invertebrates, like amano shrimp?**
A: I use this product on a regular basis and I have snails and shrimp in my tank. No problems.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not a miracle worker, but certainly helps with BBA
*by E***Y on 21 July 2023*

If you pair this product with weekly 50% water changes and a reduction in lighting, your plants will thank you. Saw good results in BBA reduction, going grey and dying within the first week. Stubborn, well established BBA is still there but greatly reduced. Rooted and epiphyte plants grew significantly as well even with lower light. Overall, great product to deal with a tank that has been neglected for a few weeks and needs a ‘reset’ but wouldn’t recommend as a constant addition due to the chemicals within the product being not great for aquatic life for a prolonged amount of time.
