    A Gentle Masterpiece

*by D***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 19, 2017*

I've been approaching a lot of flicks I've seen lately with a dose of cynicism. I was left unmoved by the most recent remake of "Murder on the Orient Express" and the last installment of Marvel's cash cow "Thor" which would be better entitled "Bore". I wasn't holding out a lot of hope for this star vehicle of a current cast member of "Saturday Night Live". Been a fan of the series since its inception in 1975 but the history of its featured players' forays onto the big screen is a decidedly mixed bag. Take the case of the star of the current cast Kate McKinnon. She wasted her prodigious talents on unadulterated piffle like the most recent "Ghostbusters" reboot and "Rough Night". Kyle Mooney is another story. Lorne Michaels probably recognizes his abilities but really doesn't know what to do with him. Mooney's contributions are usually relegated to the end of the show where sketches go to die. All that said "Brigsby Bear" is nothing short of miraculous. Not unlike forbearers Andy Kauffman and Jim Carrey Mooney successfully channels the inner child inside the man. This is not a condescending portrayal of arrested development akin to Paul Reubens' Pee Wee Herman but a succinct account of a man who has childishness foisted on him and abruptly having to confront adulthood. It's not so much an account of a man who wants to continue living an adolescent fantasy rather he is seeking closure to an unfortunate chapter of his life. What is so striking about this film is how heartfelt it is. This is a brilliant work. If I was an actor I wouldn't just line up I would work for scale like they do for Woody Allen just to be in this flick. I'm amazed how this minor miracle of a movie underperformed at the box office when you consider how meager the offerings were this Summer. The plaudits for this film should not so much be stated but shouted from the rooftops.

    A strange, but heartfelt movie

*by H***D on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 24, 2021*

This one is a bit odd, but I liked it. The beginning has a false reality vibe that I dig, and the idea that Brigsby Bear would become widely popular in the age of YouTube and infinitely nested subcultures is entirely believable, to the point I was waiting for it to happen. I also liked the nostalgia of VHS tapes, the fun depiction of indie film-making, and the deliberately cheesy look/feel of the Brigsby Bear episodes. Every actor brings their A-game, and none more than the lead, who does a great job breathing life into the awkward, earnest, naive character at the center of this movie. One of the big charms is seeing everything through his idiom and his frame of reference. Brigsby is also poignant, a tale about lost innocence and the search for meaning. I'm not sure I ever need to see it again, but I recommend watching it at least once, and I will remember it for a long time.

    Interesting Take on Child Abduction

*by P***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 16, 2021*

The protagonist, we find out, was abducted as a child and raised by his abductors. Now in his mid-20s, he is rescued and faced with a world he has no understanding of. As might be imagined, this causes problems. The title character is the star of a children's TV show that was created by his abductors and has only one person in its audience -- the protagonist. He decides to make a movie about this character. The people-in-charge think he should be moving on.The film is about the resulting conflict, the friends he makes, and the film. And a good time is had by all -- including any who watch it!
