The iPhone has a built in GPS but, unless you have one with a SIM, the iPad does not. A wifi only iPad makes a guess at where you are if you are on a cellular network internet but it's not great. When I heard about the Bad Elf GPS for lightning connector, I contacted the e-canalmapp developer and asked if he thought it would be compatible; he wasn't sure but thought probably yes.After buying one, I took it to the boat (which is in a marina just now), took the iPad off internet access and plugged the GPS unit in. It took maybe 5 mins to lock on and get position, which inside a steel tube of a narrowboat is perhaps not too surprising, and then launched the app. And, yes! It knew where I was! As I walked up and down the boat, the location arrow on the app moved which was good, but I need to try it when we get out onto the canal now, but it's looking good! ### ⭐⭐⭐ MORE INFO *by M***D on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2014* I Use an I pad Air as a standby NAV unit and to get weather information on a boat in the med. I was going to buy the blue tooth version but though that it was just too much money and this was a reasonable option. They do not tell you that you can not plug the bad Elf in using the lightning connector without taking the Ipad cover off as the tongue on the Bad Elf is not long enough. The only reason it gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because my iPad just fits and no more which for people of a nervous disposition will not like but I can tell you that the kids have had it for a week now and it has never came out of the case so it's safe to say it fits but only just.
