They are true to size and a 5 inch should fit a 5 inch duct perfectly. This is an excellent addition to either a stove vent or clothes dryer vent. It prevents back draft air from entering the duct and also prevents conditioned air from escaping my house. **Q: Hi - would it be best to put this at the end of the vent (near the outside) or on the house closest to the dryer? My vent is installed in the soffit.** A: Always at the end of the vent where the air exhaust to the outside of your house. You want to keep cold and hot air from being forced into your house on windy days as well as insect and birds from nesting. I also have the spring loaded damper door on my clothes dryer. I've installed these on three fan / ventilation pipes and they all work fine. I install with the hinge vertically, so the flaps open like doors and close easily.
