Sand is my choice for a shooting bag ! **Q: Is the bag's fill sand?** A: Yes. It is sand or sand like. It's nice and heavy and will mold to your rifle or hand, when shooting a pistol or revolver.I think you can buy them with out the filling to save on shipping.At the range I take 6 x 1 blocks of wood to make it higher, if necessary. I cut mine about 12" long.It's a great product. Make sure you look at all the Caldwell products before making you decision.Their range sled is also very nice. Also, go to the range and see what other shooters are using.Good luck & good shooting. **Q: About how tall is the bag when a rifle is resting on it?** A: As per the picture: Dimensions: 11 1/2" long X 8 1/2" wide x 9" tall. The depth of the notch: About 3". From bench to bottom of notch 5 1/4" Then add the thickness of your forestock. Depending on your rifle, chances are it will not sink all the way to the bottom of the notch. So maybe....5 1/4 + 1/2" + 1" forestock = 6 3/4 " from bench to rifle bore.I also really like it for shooting my pistols to get my best accuracy (Testing ammo or testing a new pistol) Put your wrist and forearm in the notch. If you shoot a revolver, make sure the front of the cylinder is beyond the gun rest. The cylinder gap flash might put a hole in the material.I also have about 6 pieces of lumber, cut to size, to raise the height of the gun rest. 2 x 6 x 16" long. You can also sit on them, to raise you up. I've done it.Or...Forget the whole thing and go to an Asian Market and buy a 25# cloth bag of rice. They work pretty darn good. LOL Good Shooting.
