They have always leaned more towards the comical than the dramatic, as does this book, collected from the Legends of Tomorrow ensemble title. This book is not so much a reinvention of the concept, but a return to form from the last reinvention of the team. It reestablishes most everything the classic titles had, with the only big change being Doctor Magnus's younger age. Fret not; his personality and wit are still intact. The entire book reads like a much lighter, occasionally-Silver-Age story, and this works wonders to its benefit. It's often funny, well-paced, and keeps the stakes just high enough for investment without feeling to weighty. There are several characters from the wider DCU who show up throughout, and without spoiling them, I was delighted to see each and every one of them, even in limited roles. Every character used is very thematically appropriate, both in theme as well as in history with the Metal Men. Art is great; always clean, bright, and fun. I do have a few nitpicks, although none too big to merit lowering the score any. Like many trade paperback collections that DC releases, each chapter is separated by the cover the original issue was released with. However, due to the multiple-character issues of Legends of Tomorrow's comic run, the covers in question tend to highlight Firestorm and Metamorpho as well, neither of whom are present in this. This will certainly prove confusing to somebody not in-the-know. Additionally, the series goes to a decent length to establish a "bigger bad" behind the machinations of the events, but the villain in question is dispatched almost immediately at the end, without a fight, and without a proper explanation as to what happened. It's not huge, but it was strange enough to merit a mention. All in all, though, this is the best Metal Men story I have seen in years.
