**Q: Are hinges necessary**
A: Not these days because of Hawid and similar mounts, if you are using pages that require mounts of some kind such as loose leaf. These are more expensive than hinges but are essential if you are mounting U/M, or L/M and do not wish to spoil the gum any further. I find Dauwalders of Salisbury the most economical. To save on the expense, though, I use ordinary hinges for used and previously hinged mint stamps, and as Mrs Cross does, I cut them in half. Not only to mount more stamps, but the smaller the hinge, the less you will mark the gum.
