I can't tell if it's reflection on the picture next yo the drawers.** A: Yes, there is a shelf to the left of the drawers (looking from the front). It's about level with halfway down the lower drawer. **Q: What load can it take in kg?** A: The bench top can take 100kg. Not sure about the shelf, think it's 30kg. **Q: it Is useless to market Hilda bench and not specify the weight it is designed to securely support, e.g. a lathe.** A: Which lathe did you have in mind? I know lathes and have several, both for wood and metal. It will easily support a variety of bench top machines. I bought this Hilka unit for my mini bench top milling machine but for heavy centre loads, e.g. 50kg or above in the middle of the worktop, I would recommend that you use the supplied 18mm MDF worktop on the bottom shelf and make a thicker top and add support under the centre division to the floor. You can also have the drawers either side by just fitting them the opposite way round. I have only used mine without the nuts and bolts to check clearances in my room for later assembly and it holds itself up very well. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the metal thickness and rigidity. I don't know the guage of the steel but it's 1mm thick with the powder coating.
