The Broken Compass, which has received less attention in the conservative press than it deserves, mixes Hitchens's analysis of modern British politics - and the lack of any small-c conservative party - with his own memoirs as an industrial and foreign correspondent. --Ed West, The Catholic Herald'[Hitchens] writes with much of the verve and brio of his elder brother [Christopher Hitchens] and with a greater regard for detail and accuracy.' --Anthony Howard, New Statesman'[Hitchens] writes with much of the verve and brio of his elder brother [Christopher Hitchens] and with a greater regard for detail and accuracy. Anthony Howard, New Statesman 'Hitchens is in general exhilaratingly good when attacking the hypocrisies and stupidities of specific individuals... The best parts of the book are the vivid (and self-ironical) scenes of foreign reporting.' --Steven Poole, The Guardian

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An excellent and incisive read - despite its being nearly 10 years old.
*by T***S on 29 October 2018*

Hitchens accurately and eloquently explores aspects of British and international (insofar as it affects the United Kingdom) society. His commentary on the closure of much of the rail network and also his analysis of the motives of those who decided upon the closure of grammar schools is particularly cogent, profound and not least true. He is not afraid to evaluate Islam in western terms. In fact, Hitchens articulates very well on many subjects which would lead to difficulties for the average citizen. However, I feel that he does not explore enough the common denominator of all the themes upon which he touches, namely materialism. Materialism is the driving force behind many of the changes that Hitchens correctly identifies and regrets as do many thinking people in the UK today. The book is without doubt eminently quotable.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A must read for any would-be Conservative voters
*by C***L on 2 June 2015*

Reading this book in the aftermath of the 2015 election, it is fascinating to examine how many of Hitchen's arguments have proven to be absolutely true. Whilst he was wrong about the Tory party's ability to win a majority, his analysis of how the political media works arguably helps to explain their victory. Hitchens makes a compelling case for conservative people to reject the Conservative party, whilst also offering interesting anecdotes detailing his perspective as a foreign correspondent during the fall of the Soviet Union. The Cameron Delusion is a must read.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The very best of the Hitchslap
*by R***R on 9 December 2013*

I first cottoned onto the journalism of Hitchens from Question Time. His article in the Mail on Sunday is always the common sense perspective and this book does not disappoint on that front. You may not agree with it all but in general he speaks the truth.
