It won't prevent the rust but it will help. **Q: Is there any smell to this? (I need to use it inside a head piece)** A: It's actually just closed-cell neoprene about 1/8" thick, with a good aggressive adhesive on one side. I got the 4" wide and used it for the running boards (step-side) on my 2003 Silverado. I didn't notice any offensive or off-putting odor, and had to cut, handle, and install it, successfully. Looks good and worked for me! **Q: Is it easy to remove or will it leave a sticky residue?** A: Sorry I can't answer that. I bought it to replace the old strip on the bottom of the rocking chair legs.
