If you out your check valve between the counter and Te CO2 source, you'll get back flow from the tank that will fill the bubble counter. It will also be fine for a 20 gallon; this is just the bubble counter, it doesn't come with any CO2. **Q: How does this work?** A: It's for people who add CO2 to their aquariums to help plants grow. You fill this with water and then run your CO2 through it. (Connect tubing from your CO2 cannister to the input, then connect more tubing from the output to your fish tank end.) The whole point of this product is for you to be able to count the bubbles of CO2 going into your tank so that you know how much you are adding to your tank. You can get some great looking glass alternatives but they're more pricey of course. This does a good job and comes with either a clip to hook onto the tank or a sucker to stick it on. The sucker tilts it at a slight angle which is a minor irritant but otherwise it's fine.
