First few twists were a bit harder than I expected, but by the 3rd or 4th turn it was smooth. The mechanics of this are exactly the same as the 30-year old grinder that we needed to replace. If you are looking for a hand-held grinder with a gear mechanism that feels like it magnifies your effort and turns easily, this isn't it. But if you want a classic, durable, very cheap model and you are willing to put a little elbow grease in, this is what you are looking for.
