I have never used them without. If you put 10 Kg on the bar I assume that it would be really 11 Kg or 24.2 lbs I dont have a scale that would measure that accurately so I dont know, but I assume Im right. It makes sence that the manufacturers would make them a spasific weight.So I assume that they are designed to weigh whatever they with the dumbbells and the collars together. **Q: what's the length of these?** A: I will have you know; I actually got off my butt and measured them. They are 14 inches long and have a 1 inch diameter. Metal and have threads for the spin lock collars. **Q: Will each of these bars Safely hold 40 kg and upwards?** A: If you put x2 10kg on each side Yes but if you try to overload you will run out of space to screw bolt back on. I’ve had mine for yearsssssssss and they are still good to go. Well money invested. I hope this helps.
