## Overview

The Raspberry Pi NoIR v2.1 Camera Module features an 8MP Sony IMX219 sensor optimized for infrared photography, enabling high-resolution stills (3280x2464) and HD video (1080p30, 720p60). Designed for all Raspberry Pi models, it supports the latest Raspbian OS and offers unique night vision capabilities by omitting the IR filter. Ideal for security, scientific, and creative projects, it includes a blue gel filter to enhance IR imaging.

## Description

The infra-red camera module v2 (Pi NoIR) replaced the original PiNoIR camera in April 2016. The v2 camera has a Sony IMX219 8-megapixel sensor (compared to the 5-megapixel OmniVision OV5647 sensor of the original camera). The Pi NoIR gives you everything the regular camera module offers, with one difference: it does not employ an infrared filter. (NoIR = No Infrared.) This means that pictures you take by daylight will look decidedly curious, but it gives you the ability to see in the dark with infrared lighting. The camera works with all models of Raspberry Pi 1, 2 and 3. It can be accessed through the MMAL and V4L APIs, and there are numerous third-party libraries built for it, including the Picamera Python library. The V2 cameras are also backwards compatible, should you want to swap out a Pi Camera on an existing project or use an older model of Raspberry Pi. Just make sure you're version of Raspbian is up to date. There are some changes, of course, primarily in its CCD resolution. It now boast an 8 megapixel Sony IMX219 CCD (as opposed to its predecessor's 5 megapixels), and there's a new lens in place to beam a crystal-clear image onto it. You can expect resolutions for Photos up to 3280 px by 2464 px and Video at 1080p at 30fps; 720p at 60 fps; and 640 by 480p at 90 fps, offering a bit of slow-mo fun.

Review: Really quite impessive - During lock down I set myself a goal of putting a CCTV system together for my motorcycle garage and this project just keeps on growing! I purchased this camera for a PI Zero W and it has not disappointed as secondary camera when using the IR LED's from a the camera on an old Raspberry PI 2 that I had laying around
Review: Excellent picture quality. - I wanted to make a night camera that wasn’t washed out by bright lights (torches and headlights) so you need one of these and your own IR band pass filter matched to your illumination source wavelength that swings over the camera at night. Daylight pictures are purple tinted as there is no IR cut filter but for security purposes who cares.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can this be used in real-time, e.g. on a Raspberry pi robot car?**
A: Yes. can work of a battery, but watch the voltage, can be set to record video or time lapse stills

**Q: Is this product compatible and ready to work (cables) with rpi zero w ?**
A: No. Pi zero has its own camera and cables are much thinner.

**Q: We want to build a security system for the front of the house. Would this be suitable for that? Also does it have night vision?**
A: The Pi NoIR gives you everything the regular camera module offers, with one difference: it does not employ an infrared filter. (NoIR = No Infrared.) This means that pictures you take by daylight will look decidedly curious, but it gives you the ability to see in the dark with infrared lighting.
I built a similar project with the camera and my suggestion is to buy something off the shelf instead. You can now get good clones of the ring video doorbell etc now so I would just buy that or a IP camera/security camera ready to go

**Q: How long is the ribbon cable on this item? Im looking to put it on the front of a project and the pi sits in the back(about 30cm away)**
A: It's 10cm

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ but have bought some 850nm ones that should work better according to other reviews I've read
*by X***A on 28 March 2017*

The sharpness isn't quite what I was hoping for, and it doesn't work well with my 950nm IR LEDs, but have bought some 850nm ones that should work better according to other reviews I've read, but over all happy with it. Note that mine was out of focus out of the box for some reason, just rotate the lens if you experience this.
