You need a shelf or table to clamp it to but it's quite secure and very adjustable. I was hoping the light would be a little brighter. It's about 12-18" from my face and not quite bright enough. I use the white 'colour' as it's the brightest. In the USA they have a similar unit but with two rings for only $19 (about £15). I tried to get one here but they don't seem available in the UK. Shame.
