You do pay a premium for Thunderbolt technology anyway, but it works reliably and well. This cable links an iMac to an Anker 577 Thunderbolt dock, so runs several devices through it. For a single device I might 'risk' a cheaper non-Apple cable.

**Q: is this cable backward compatible to mini display port?**
A: This is a data cable not a mini display port cable. It can only be used to transfer data using a thunderbolt 2 connection. Same shape as a mini display port, but the ports and cables are not the same. You won't get image/display from this.

**Q: Could this cable be used to connect between the tb port on the rear of a tb 27" display to the tb port of a macbook pro 2012 ?**
A: my personal opinion,.... no
I had MBPro 2011, which connects, but just bought 2017 27" which does not. 
I've just ordered an adapter (Apple TB3 USB-3 to TB2 adapter £20)...which should solve (MY) problem

A: The other way round work. iMac can be used as a second display got MacBook when connected

**Q: Is this an active TB2 cable?**
A: Yes, TB2 cables are active and have electronics in each of the connectors.

Cable does exactly what I needed it to, but as others have commented, it's a bit annoying that the only options are 2m or 0.5m. The 0.5m is really quite short for most purposes, but 2m is longer than I need. 1m would have been nice (and presumably cheaper). And that's why I can only give this 4 stars - because I think that paying £32 for a cable is a bit steep.
