## Description

Vox StompLab series of effect pedals are impressive new contenders that pack powerful sounds into compact and sophisticated looking metal bodies. Sound variations are categorized by style, such as rock, blues, and ballad, making it easy for even novice users to recall the desired sound. In addition to the StompLab IG's dedicated guitar modeling and the StompLab IB dedicated bass modeling, the lineup also includes the StompLab IIG and IIB which provide an expression pedal. With high-quality looks, plus its high quality sound, the StompLab series will be a great companion for the guitarist or bassist for years to come. Multi-effects units contain an incredibly diverse array of sounds that range from distorted to clean, and the sheer number of these sounds can be staggering. Although having a large number of sounds is a great advantage, it can also overwhelm the novice user, causing difficulty or confusion. The StompLab series is designed to be easily usable, even by novice players. Since each program is named with a musical style, such as rock, blues, or metal. You'll be able to find the perfect sound without being concerned with specific effect names. The musical styles are categorized into ten types, and cover everything from straight-ahead traditional styles to quirky, unusual sounds. There are ten variations for each category, so you're sure to find sounds you like. Simply playing the preset sounds is a lot of fun, but you'll definitely want to create some of your own original sounds as well. The StompLab IG contains 103 types of modeling effects, the StompLab IIG has 104, the StompLab IB has 60, and the StompLab IIB has 61. These effects are categorized as pedal, amp, drive, cabinet, modulation, delay, and reverb effects. When noise reduction is included, you can use up to 8 of them simultaneously. Each effect type provides multiple parameters that you can deeply edit to create your perfect sound.

Review: A wonderful box of tricks - This is a robust little multi-effects unit with an expression pedal that can be assigned to various parameters. For me it’s usually the wah. Vox were the originators of the wah pedal in the 60s and their iteration in this mini pedal is full of character and is tweakable to give the range and tones you want. The default setting is fine. But obviously it’s more than a wah pedal. There are also 36 amp models covering classic, modern and boutique amps. I’ve not had the experience of playing through all of these amp heads and combos in real life so can’t attest to the accuracy of these models, but I’m surprised and impressed how “amp-like” these models are to play. They respond to picking dynamics and guitar volume/tone adjustments just like a real tube amp will – play softer and you get a cleaner sound, play harder and you get a gradually increasing gain with more harmonic complexity. Vox have done this better than the various ZOOM and Behringer units I’ve been using for years – it really is a massive improvement on what I’ve been used to. It’s important to set the global output from this box to match what you’re feeding it into but this is relatively easily adjusted with a dial and a few button presses – i.e. if your output is a direct line to headphones or a recording console, or if it’s to a particular type of amp (basically Fender or Marshall type combos or a bigger stack) and the output tonality is adjusted accordingly. There’s one cool retro chickenhead knob to target a genre of music (blues, jazz, metal, rock, ballad etc) with 10 preset combinations in each bank. You can move around these presets with the two sturdy foot switches and there are two more chickenhead knobs to adjust parameters of each patch. As well as the amp models there are also many modulation settings replicating various choruses, pitch-shifters, delays, reverbs etc. But this is a small unit and some sacrifices have to be made – storing your own combinations and parameters into the 20 available user spaces takes some working out given the 2-digit LED display. It’s not as informative and intuitive as the ZOOM G5 unit for example. Another compromise it took me a while to work out is that you can’t have an overdrive/distortion/fuzz effect going into a chosen amp model as they’re all in the same bank. So you can’t choose a Big Muff into a1959 Fender Bassman 4x12 for example. But the Big Muff on its own sounds fine and isn’t a problem. But overall I’m impressed. Great amp models as long as you adjust the global output settings to what you’re playing into; very responsive and musical; sturdy build; small size; great effects; 20 user-defined preset patches. Great quality for a good price
Review: Mini marvel - I play rhythm guitar with the odd lick but I'm certainly no lead-man. I have been looking out for something to shape my sounds, but needed it to have the option to be battery powered, small and simple to operate. The Stomplab delivers in spades and for what seems to be a bargain price. Out of the box it seems pleasingly well built. Style-wise, the chicken head knobs give it just enough vintage chic to override the 80's led display and it feels like it would happily live on a pedal board and not fall apart on the first gig. It's about the size of two 'boss' type pedals joined together. The quality of the foot switches is good, nice and progressive rather than a hard click. It feels like value for money. I'll quite obviously never use all the sounds it can make, not playing lead, but there are plenty of sounds I will use without resorting to the user presets, of which there are 20, which is plenty enough for me. Also you get a tuner which works well, the LED's varying in brightness with the note to show you your pitch even on the darkest stage. The sounds are great, and underline what can be achieved with modern technology in a small space. The resolution seems good to me and it doesn't sound too digital. I will use this for practising at home or indeed, wherever I like as all you need is an electric guitar, a lead and some headphones (iPod ones will do with an adaptor) and you're away. You can spend more money and get more customisable sounds, but that's something I'll never need. The package you get for less than £50 is super value in a small box that can go anywhere you can play.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does the pedal suffer from 'Noise' or 'Hiss' and is there less hiss if used with batteries? Thanks!**
A: I have only used it with batteries and there is no hiss. I am buying an adapter for ease of use. Hope that helps.

**Q: Would this unit be good for my electro acoustic, using minimum effects**
A: You have to connect to the Vox SL1G 1G with a jack plug, if your guitar connects using a jack plug, I do not know of a reason that you could not do this. However there are effects pedal designed for acoustic, acoustic electro guitars that you may get a better sound out of than one usually for electric guitars

**Q: Is this high enough quality to use for recording directly to a computer**
A: Yes, I have put it into an audio interface with great results. You can use a standard mono cable but I think some of the effects are stereo and I have found that using a stereo to L+R mono cable gives great results into a Focusrite Scarlett. Don’t be fooled by the small size. I think it’s 70-90% what I need. Maybe a couple more pedals but the beauty really is that you can model a range of amps and cabinets and alter settings with some practice. There’s no true graphic interface so it’s more of a set it and forget it pedal but once your sounds are in you’re good to go.

**Q: Can I conect this to a mixer for recording**
A: Hi there,
The Stomplab range has a stereo output jack from which you can connect to a mixing desk.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wonderful Multi effects player so far so good
*by S***Y on 5 November 2024*

Perfect pedal for an experienced guitarist! Purchased this for my son who's an advanced guitarist. (My son aged 13) After spotting it on Facebook Marketplace, I did some research and found it here on Amazon at a great price. The reviews convinced me this would be a better option than having him build an expensive pedal board piece by piece. Though I don't know much about guitar gear myself, I could tell this was a hit from his reaction! Originally planned as a Christmas gift, but couldn't wait to give it to him. He spent over an hour going through at least 30 different sound effects, and the quality really impressed him. What I particularly appreciated was how well it worked with his existing setup - he has a VOX amp and a Crybaby wah pedal, and this integrated perfectly. The pedal really shines when plugged into his amp - he explained that sometimes effects can sound different between practice and performance settings, but this produces distinct, professional-quality sounds that translate well to both scenarios. You can clearly hear the differences between effects, and the sound quality is excellent. For the price point, this offers incredible value with its range of effects. It's perfect for someone who wants professional sound without investing in multiple individual pedals. Seeing my son's enthusiasm and hearing the quality of sound it produces, I / he couldn't be happier with this purchase! Only time will tell, but until he starts making money as a musician it's too early to spend thousands on the high end electronic stuff.
