My Spokeshave (Stanley 151-red) is originated in England. There is a rich and very complete history of the spokeshave (it's origins associated with woodworking) written, I believe, by Jeff Peachey. He is a guri on various cutting and paring tools used in leather working. Look for his name in the "blue pages" of the internet and I am sure will better inform you of this device and it's earlier counterparts. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great quality tool for the price *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 21 April 2026* As noted by others don’t expect this to be perfect out of the box, but you’re not going to spend hours getting it good. I had to remove the grinding marks off the sole, flatten, sharpen and hone the blade, took about 20 minutes with some wet and dry and a stone (you can do with just wet and dry and a flat surface if you don’t own a stone). Cuts really nicely and sits well in the hand. You’ll need to spend a bit of time with it to get the best but it’s not a huge learning curve and worth the time invested. Not sure why there are negative reviews mine was fine, blade was a few thou out of flat but that’s about it. Great tool for the price and would highly recommend. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good tool *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 5 July 2021* Works well, it’s a good piece of kit for a very good price. It does work well but not right out the box. My ones iron was was a bit chipped and wasn’t very sharp so it needed a good sharpen. The foot/base is good but I did need to lap it flat a bit first. It’s a solid and simple tool though so with a little TLC out the pack it’s a great bargain that will do the job well and last years of use. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Decent spoke shave for the money *by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 3 March 2026* The Stanley 151 spoke shave is a handy tool for woodworkers. It provides good value for money, and should last a lifetime (with possible exception to the blade). Do not expect it to work perfectly out of the box though. The blade will require sharpening if you want the best from it, but 5-10 mins on diamond stones and a little set up, and it will perform brilliantly.The finish is a bit hit and miss - I accidentally ordered two: one was fine with a couple of small scrapes in the paint (I guess from transport), but nothing to worry about; the other had paint runs on the blade cap and a patina on the blade adjusters.
