Caran d'Ache smoothness and break-resistance is better; also rated tops for lightfastness. I see that the list prices per pencil and per sets from other sellers max at about three dollars per pencil, and discounts are minor, so I chose this reputable seller, Amazon. Good thing, because with this pencils order I also bought the Caran d'Ache cheaper $83 model pencil sharpener (the all-metal version runs about 200), but had to return that gorgeous machine because first a finger knob atop one lever fell off and I could not reattach it, then the sharpener broke off two points stuck inside and I could not unjam it the second time. But when it worked, the points could be made hair-thin and it worked beautifully. I sent that lovely red machine back today for a refund and will try the all-metal $200 sharpener when I can afford it. **Q: Are these pencils as soft as Prismacolor, or are they hard like the old Caran d' Ache ones?** A: They aren't quite as soft as Prismacolors. They don't wax bloom as easy as Prismacolors do. I really like them! **Q: Are these wax based or oil based?** A: They are a soft wax based colored pencils. They are considered one of the best lines because of their excellent lightfastness and resilience to wax bloom. **Q: Are these metallic?** A: No, these are not metallic. I have this set and the quality is superb. Caran d'Ache does have metallic pencils (and crayons), with the metallic pencils offered in sets or individually. I believe all the Caran d'Ache metallics are water-soluble, meaning you have the option to create a wash effect. Stunning 3D effects and outstanding,vibrant,explosive Colour can be achieved with these miraculous pencils. Words do not express the sheer quality and vibrancy of colour that one can get with these superior pencils,are they cheap? No! but if you spend the money on these your drawings will have a professional edge and sheen other manufacturers simply cannot hope to achieve. And no breakage of lead...ever,each pencil is a work of art in itself. The box holds each pencil snugly in a rubber mold and is rugged and well designed.
