A little goes a long way. Both sports smells and sour laundry smells are usually eliminated in the first wash, certainly by the second. And they don't come back. Regular fabric softener can't be used on sports clothing anyway, but when used on towels it just eliminates the smell at the time. Once towels are damp again, the sour smell creeps back in.
