A month and a half ago I bought three sets of Couch Guard for our brand new couch (the couch is by "Rivet," an Amazon brand—thank you once again, Amazon!). Our last couch, which we had for exactly two years, was TOTALLY destroyed by my husband's two wonderful, otherwise-loving cats. Also destroyed were my late parents' two couches, their wingback armchairs, and the couch my husband had when I first met him. (I almost broke up with him then-and-there, actually. I HATE shredded furniture. HATE it.)Okay. Obviously, we tried other solutions first. Unsightly cat furniture and toys. Masking tape. Then nail caps. (Oh, my gosh, the damage a cat can do with silicone nail caps ON, gouging huge holes in upholstery...!) Then I bought a sweater shaver. You know, for shaving the fuzz off of sweaters? At one point I seriously threatened divorce. I did my research, and I found out that declawing is illegal in the state of California.THIS time, with this new couch, I pledged I would not be giving up any more furniture to these little jerks. I opted for Couch Guard, which is adhesive, and I chose it over the OTHER type of couch guard that uses pushpins. And... Couch Guard is pretty good! I like that it can be trimmed to size. We have a reversible L-shaped sectional, so—honestly, I guess it doesn't matter whether or not you can picture this—the very final piece got trimmed into four pieces, to protect both cushion and ottoman.Our couch is gray, and we tend to prefer "mood lighting" anyway, so... you mostly can't see it!! Initially my husband lamented that you actually CAN see it, and I guess if there were a matte version it would be even better, but truth be told, you'd have to REALLY want to come in here and judge us to even NOTICE the Couch Guard.The one issue I can see, is that the four little short trimmed pieces are curling slightly and need to be stuck back down to the couch. I know, I know: pushpins. I could grab a flat pushpin right now and stick the curled corner back down. No way. I made a decision with my initial purchase, and I stand by it. No pushpins.Anyway. Enough time has transpired that, if the cats were going to wreck this couch, I think I'd know by now. And, except for having Couch Guard on it, the couch looks exactly like it did the day it first arrived! Should a piece of adhesive eventually give up the ghost, curl off, and flutter to the floor, I will probably buy MORE Couch Guard, because it's just that decent.I think the best part of this little invention is, it actually trains the cats to not even try. The house is full of other stuff to tear up, but the cats have suddenly turned into little angels and now only attack their rope scratching posts and cardboard thingies. My cat had started to scratch my new couch. On my last couch, I had used clear packing tape on the corners that effectively achieved the same result as these guards (a little cheap looking, but... it was a cheap solution), and I wanted something nicer this time.Overall, this works for what I need. It's super obvious that I have plastic on the corners, maybe more so than if it was a fabric couch.I did peel one of them off after a few days to test, and while it didn't seem to hurt the fabric, it DID peel away the pleather where it had been previously damaged by claws.All in all, I'm happy enough with the solution - my cat doesn't seem to be interested in it anymore, and it doesn't look as bad as torn up furniture. While I don't particularly like that it's really obvious I have plastic on the couch, I do plan to keep my cat. One of his very few flaws is he took to scratching a leather rocker recliner that we have. I decided to try this after researching a variety of anti-scratch products. It has worked wonderfully. It is very easy to apply - you just peel the paper back off, cut to size if need be (I did get the largest size and used all of it), and it has remained on the chair with no problem. No one has noticed I applied this, and it even took my husband a couple days to realize it was on the chair. My new cat has tried to scratch the rocker recliner maybe once in the past month since I have applied this, so it has worked for us.I must add, however, that I worked hard on training my new cat not to scratch things (I added scratching posts and catnip toys near my furniture, among other methods of discouraging him from scratching furniture), so there is a possibility that just applying this adhesive without any training may not get optimal results.
