Review: Works great for monitoring Solar Panel input - I purchased this Sonoff Power Monitor on a hunch as i couldn't find any information on it to see if it would work in a bidirectional way - ie to monitor wattage going in rather than out. I have a few sonoff products around my home and always find them to be great pieces of technology that work just how they are suppose too. You need to have the eWelink app installed to get the most out of these device, the app is free and easy to download. Connecting up this device was a breeze there are very decent quality connectors for you Live and Load inputs, and installation only took around 5 mins. Unfortunately as with all sonoff products i own there is no earth connector so i had to make my own. Once powered up i was extremely pleased to see that it was indeed bidirectional and measured the wattage and ampage coming in from my solar array. Checking the app i was able to watch the wattage from the panels increase as more sunlight hit the panels. The only thing that didn't work was the wattage as this displayed the grid wattage rather than the solar voltage, but Watts and Amps worked great. Remote control of the device was also great, i was able to switch on and off the mains portion of the device without issue from the device and the app. For standard appliance use, you can not go wrong with this energy monitor - it seems to be very accurate and will feed the data directly into the app, or you can just look at the LCD display - i do wish there was a backlight on the display as it was at times hard to read. Have read that you can access certain items via ifttt and a raspberry pi.Ewelink do do a Web interface on PC but you have to pay for it! . **Q: No earth terminal? i want to use the sonoff switch for my immersion but it looks like there is no earth terminals. any solutions? uk type wiring** A: Mount an adaptable box (4x4”) below the sonOff take all cables through this box to the sonOff and leave the earths in the box joined in a connector. **Q: Is this suitable to connect directly to an immersion water heater from a switched spur?** A: I've been using the 20A model for the last month and a bit with my immersion heater. Keep in mind: 1) I'm not an expert on the IET wiring regulation. 2) These new models do not have any built in cable clamping on the cables insulation. This is going to leave some risk of live cables accidentally getting pulled out. I've added external cable clamps to mitigate this risk. 3) The flex to the immersion heater should be the heat resistant type. 4) Normal practice is to have an immersion heater on its own dedicated circuit back to the fuse box. This ensures there is no chance of overloading the cables. I think you are allowed to run off a spur but the 13A current for the heater is going to be using nearly all the spurs capacity of 16A. So no sharing with anything else. 5) The 20A model is only a few pounds extra, can't hurt to have a more robust relay switching the current and in life the less you push things to their limit the longer they tend to last. **Q: does it work without a smart meter?** A: Yes. It’s simply a mains voltage power monitor. I have mine between the grid tie inverter and the socket I have back fed into. Works very well. I had some trouble pairing it but eventually it worked. Links into Home assistant :) ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works Well *by J***F on 17 December 2025* Works well. Easy to install, easy to set up. Instructions not clear but it’s quite intuitive. Paired with Alexa means this is properly smart, and I don't have to rely on eWeLink App. Only issue I have is that the terminals are not completely enclosed and the wires, while secure still feel quite exposed.
