Review: Believe the hype - I tried not to let my expectations get too high for this album. Following up The Mountain, easily my top album of 2013, seemed like an impossible task. But then, this is Haken, a band on a completely different level. By the time 1985 kicked in, it was clear this album is yet another masterpiece. 1985 is my favorite track: 80s synth leads, power drums, killer guitar & keyboard riffs, and even some modern djent chords sprinkled perfectly throughout. The biggest surprise here is probably the last third of The Architect. A 15-minute progressive powerhouse is to be expected, but this track (and only this track) brings back the death growls not heard since Aquarius. I'm not a huge fan of growls (only Opeth and a few others can consistently pull it off), but these from guest Einar Solberg of Leprous fit well and are at least understandable. There is a second disc with instrumentals, always a welcome addition, although Ross Jennings is such a great vocalist that I don't think I'll be listening to it very much. I'd like to see future albums use that second disc for a high-res DVD/Blu-ray version (e.g. TesseracT's Polaris, Opeth's Pale Communion, etc).
Review: Continues the Tradition - I pre-ordered this based on their previous releases - Aquarius, Visions, The Mountain, and Restoration. Over the past several years, Haken has become my new favorite band. I consider them to be a progressive rock band with metal influences; they combine incredible musicianship, technically superior songwriting, and beautiful vocals, all in a symphony of concept albums. Really, they take the best of the progressive rock of the 70's, and add a modern twist with metal overtones. Affinity continues in that tradition. I'm listening to it for the first time as I write this review, and so far, it's a great follow up to their previous work. Like The Mountain, they use time signature changes, extreme dynamics, and complex song structure to keep the listener engaged. To my ear, they've perfected the progressive rock and metal formula. Vocal counterpoints, synth and guitar leads, solid bass and drums keeping a steady beat behind impossible time signatures - it boggles the mind. Overall, if you enjoyed their previous albums, you should enjoy Affinity.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great album with the mainstream crushed mix
*by W***B on May 2, 2016*

This disc is addictive, one that urges the listener to keep it on repeat as it gets better each time. Haken have stepped up their game and finally sound like a band. Sure the influences of others (DT, Gentle Giant) are still there but this release has all the band mates involved in writing and it is something special. Highlights include “1985” - killer syncopated riffs, odd time signatures, moments of 1980’s reverb soaked drums, and a driving groove that never lets up. “Lapse” is sort of a laid back tune with a tasty break and superb keyboard and guitar solos. “The Architect” is the longest tune on the album, and even though I roll my eyes and laugh when the thirty seconds of ‘guest growls’ happen, this tune is a stunner. Not all the disc is pounding crunch and riffage. “Red Giant” a quirky and purposely off beat tune where the drums and bass go crazy during the break, and “Bound by Gravity” a slow number, show there is more to Haken than heaviness. Now for the not so good… the mixing/mastering of this is sad. Haken have plenty of soft and loud passages that happen in the same song and because the final product is crushed with over-compression the impact of these segues are lost because everything is so freaking LOUD. Shame on whoever approved the final mixes. Perhaps instead of the second disc being instrumental how about a mix with tons of dynamics for those who know how a volume knob works? Regardless of how crushed the mix is, this is without question my favorite Haken album to date.
