The letters can be a little tricky to get off the plastic, but if you just twist them and then pull it makes it easier and you don't end up with little plastic tails so to speak on the letters. My only regret is seeing all the other colors available along with different colored letters. I read a lot of reviews so I knew what to expect when I got the board. I found a plastic organizer to separate out the pieces. Made it much simpler to put my first board together once the pieces were all cut and trimmed. It took a few hours to separate all the letters and numbers but it wasn’t too bad. Just watched tv while I did it. I used scissors, nail clippers, and sometimes a nail file when the nail clippers weren’t getting the nubs off close enough. Pro tip: for the tiny punctuation pieces, try to cut as close to the symbol as possible when you are cutting it from the plastic stick so you don’t have to trim the nubs off after-the-fact. It’s easier to do this on the apostrophes and periods than it is on the letters.
