It is equal to the reciprocal of the focal length measured in meters (that is, 1/diopter in meters). For example, a 3-diopter lens focuses parallel light rays at  1⁄3 meter. A flat window has an optical power of zero diopters, and does not converge or diverge light. So 1.5 diopters focuses at 1/1.5=.66 m or 26 inches, 2 diopter is 1/2 m= 20 inches. The higher the diopter you choose the closer to your eye you will be able to focus. I have readers with powers from 1.5 up to 5 and choose the one to use depending on what I am working on. For extremely detailed stuff I use use the 5 and work close to my face. For reading around 20 inches away 1.5 or 2 work well. As one ages the ability to change the focal point is reduced and it becomes harder to make things closer to you come into focus and you will require higher diopter assistance. Reading glasses power or diopter is more a measure of this ability to focus rather than making things larger. Since the lenses sit fairly close your eye lense they don't change the size of things very much but make it easier to focus in a particular range. To get a size change I have to hold the lense about 1/2 way between the item and my eye then the lense acts as a magnifier. For me with 1.75 diopter lenses I can focus on objects in a range of about 11 inches to 16 inches. Outside of that range stuff starts to blur. With 2, the range is 10 to 15 roughly. With 3 diopter the range is around 7 inches to 11 inches. So keep in mind that the diopter is adding to your current ability to focus, your range will be different than mine. Bottom line: if you use 1.75 now, either 1.5 or 2 will work. 1.5 is less power and your clear focus range will be farther away. Whereas with 2 the range will be a little closer. I bet you won't even notice the difference. The only time if really matters is if you can't move your head or the object into the focus range or when the object is in focus it is still too small to see. **Q: I too am a female looking for industrial safety glasses with readers and when I search "womens" I get pink! I hate pink! Do they fit a womans head?!** A: Yes, they fit this woman's head. Amazon replaced it very soon. The second pair was more scratched out of the box. Since I needed it for my woodworking class very badly, I kept the first one, but returned the second pair. The glasses work fine, it is the packaging that scratches the lenses during delivery. Dewalt should consider using some types of protective plastic covering on the lenses during packaging. Other than that they work fine. Sometimes, I don't realize I have them on. They are light weight and very comfortable to use.
