Review: So far it is saving us a LOT of money - First, I am an almost 84 year old woman with minor "handyman" skills. I looked over the instructions several times, and also found a video on You Tube and viewed that. I was able to install this unit, after removing our Honeywell unit, with very little trouble. Originally, our "R" wire did not show up, so I had to take off the cover, pull out that wire, make sure it was straight and inserted firmly, and that brought success. Admittedly, it was made easier because all our wires were color coded to match the letter they had, and we had every wire we needed. The one thing I wished was that I had brought some really good "VHB" double faced tape home, and put the backer plate on with that. Our drywall is so old that the screws just rattled around. I was able to fix it with tape for the time being, but I think at some point I'll need to remove it and reinstall the backplate more firmly with better tape. So -- have no fear! I did turn off my main electrical switch just in case but other than that, just about anyone should be able to install this unit. After we got air conditioning, our Honeywell thermostat started to malfunction, and the furnace would turn on and would not turn off. Our gas bill went through the roof -- about $180 when it is normally, in winter, about $60.00. I wish I would have ordered this a month ago, but I didn't realize what the bill would be like! Obviously, the savings would have paid for the new thermostat. All that said, we all love this thermostat! It looks nice, and when you get close, you know what the temperature is. You can easily set it, and everything responds almost immediately. Our furnace has barely gone on at all, and yet it is comfortable (we are having a reasonably warm spell -- not uncommon here in Southern Cal.) Review: Very easy to set up. - The thermostat was very easy to install and set up. It went to a different language at first and I had to change it back to my language. Besides that it works great with the app and with Alexa. I would recommend it highly. ### ⭐ Caution buying tech devices from third parties, like Woot *by G***A on January 19, 2026* Great thermostat. Why the one-star review? The one from Amazon was crap. It was old (but unused) and defective. The first clue was when I installed it and nothing happened. I kept pressing on the front and turning the dial and nothing - zip - nada. I diligently read the manual and there was no step I missed. So I googled it and found that some people said you had to charge it -- no mention of that in manual. So I took it off the wall and charged it. Then the real fun began. I could not get it to connect to my wifi. The QR code would not work and the hand-entering of serial numbers etc also did not work. Thus began my 2-3 hours of time on the phone with Google support. They finally confirmed the unit was defective and I sent it back to Google and am getting a replacement. The hint was that Google said the warranty expired Nov 2025 when I bought the unit in Jan 2026 from Amazon! It was sold by Woot and shipped by Amazon. Clearly this unit had been acquired long ago and probably not stored correctly.
