When heat/vacuum is applied, occasionally the solvent mixture will violently boil or “bump.” This glassware prevents the solvent mixture from entering the condenser, prevent contamination of the instrument in places that are difficult to clean, and improves overall yield by allowing the solvent mixture to drain back into the evaporation flask.
