I think because the size of the bore within the head of the tool which is supposed to clamp the copper is too small. This meant the two parts of the head didn't come together properly & the flairing inserts skipped on the threads as I tried to tighten them. If I tried to close the threads by tightening & clamping the copper pipe harder, it deformed and left ridges in the copper pipe & the head of the flair was rough and ineffective.
