They have enough of a point to hold the patch in place, are durable and the slim portion behind the full bore section allows the patch to fold back and avoid getting stuck in the bore. But don't try to get too tight of a patch down the bore - I've bent some that way. My mistake - patches don't need to be that tight to work well - get better solvent, run more patches and be patient.
