They have side zippers so you can lace them just how you like and then leave them alone. There is a little space in the toe of the boot, but that worked well with my orthotics. The factory insoles are actually quite good. I had room to put in my orthotics and then put the factory insoles on top. Reviews do state that the tread might wear faster than average. I picked them up for an EMT class as I didn't want to be wearing my big bulky station boots for lecture days when we weren't doing anything that warranted a work boot. They are comfortable, but there is no substantial protection for your toes, so don't get them if you're wanting to wear them in an environment where there are those risks of dropping/crushing hazards for your feet. I was able to perform the tasks for lab days without issue and my feet never hurt. Lightweight and breathable, plus the side-zip is nice not needing to fiddle with laces everyday.
