I had problems with the directions also. My friend & I pondered over how to make it work. We finally used the directions to locate parts but had to out think the person making up the directions. It only took us about 3 hours to get it put together correctly! **Q: are the legs optional? I want to set this directly on a different base, so if anyone can tell me how the legs attach an if they can be left off.** A: The legs are an integral part of the assembly. I don't think they are optional.
