The delight of the series is watching how magnificently the detective in the rumpled coat dissects the deadly work of brilliant killers and finds the thread of the single flaw in their scheme. The lineup of culprits Columbo faced was always impressive, and his foes here include Patrick McGoohan as a military school leader who will go to murderous lengths to see the pedigree of his precious academy maintained to his expectations, Robert Vaughn as a man who has the misfortune of murdering his mistress on a cruise ship where Columbo's on vacation, Dick Van Dyke as a photographer whose plans to split from his wife are more fatal then divorce, Robert Conrad as a gym franchise tycoon who gets rid of a troublesome business partner, George Hamilton as a psychiatrist whose unprofessional relationship with a patient results in murder and Oskar Werner as a technological genius who kills his mother in law. There are plenty of familiar guests stars in cool character roles, like Larry Storch as a driving instructor whose frustrated by his ride with Columbo. Fun moments abound, such as a scene in which clues lead Columbo to a soup kitchen where he is mistaken by a nun for a bum.These episodes are among Columbo's finest. Four episodes run around 1hour 30minutes while two clock in toward 70 mins.An episode of Mrs Columbo starring Kate Mulgrew is included as well. The show's not as great as Columbo, but interesting to view as a spinoff involving the wife spoken of but never witnessed in Columbo. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars BAD DVDs *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2006* I love watching Columbo, I'm not exactly sure why as I never watched them when they were on TV. I was part of the Columbo of the month club and then have bought every DVD series they come out with...however, I have noticed that the DVDs are pretty cheap. There are several DVDs that just plain bad and I've reverted to watching the old videos I have. My favorite (which I still don't have yet!) is the one with I think Janet Leigh who murders her husband but forgets she did it. She keeps watching a movie of herself as a young woman in "Rosie" or "Walking my Baby". When will that one come out? Are there any Columbo fan clubs so we can all compare notes? And, I agree, Universal or whoever could at least give us a DVD without using side B? I think that's the problem. Whenever I have a two-sided DVD, I have a ton of trouble with it. And, would enjoy extra facts about making Columbo, etc on the DVDs. Anyway, enjoy Colombo fans! I am anxiously awaiting season 4 to arrive shortly and wondering when we'll get the next seasons out. Also love Etude in Black, By Dawn's Early Light and Murder by the Book. Also, Ransom for Dead Man is great however, I always wondered how Lee Grant could lift an 180 lb man and toss him in trunk and then down a hill? That's a blooper if you ask me. But the end is worth it and the stepdaughter's performance is great. My least favorite episode is Most Dangerous Match with the chess players.
