## Description

Product Description

Hawaiian knife maker Ken Onion told us he was working on the ultimate hunting knife, but it wasn't ready yet. We assumed that he meant he was putting the finishing touches on a prototype, and were we wrong!Instead, Ken was concluding an extensive field testing program spanning more than five years, making dozens of custom skinners and giving them to Alaskan guides, professional hunters, and taxidermists in exchange for their feedback. He kept modifying the design and sending out more knives, which have now been used to skin over 60 Alaskan bears, and have been proven on deer, elk, moose, antelope, hogs, sheep and cattle. While some were skeptical at first, it has become the favorite knife of many of the top guides. It also works well for skinning, gutting, deboning, the fine detail cuts preferred by taxidermists, and even kitchen and camp chores. We call it simply the Onion Skinner. It features a three-quarter tang Bohler K110 stainless steel blade, high hollow-ground and polished to a satin finish, with a hardness of HRC 58-60. The scales are Twin-Fused with a glass filled nylon core and soft textured TPR outside for grip. A lanyard is included. The custom leather sheath is molded and fitted to grip the scales and lock the knife in position until needed. It can be worn left or right, inside or outside the belt. Here's an explanation of its unusual features and their functions:First, the knife has a thin tip, with a slightly convex grind near the tip that minimizes drag. No caping knife is needed for detail work.Second, the top of the blade has a pronounced "camel hump". This allows the hunter to insert the tip under the skin and rock the hand back, which raises the tip up and away from the paunch.Third, the tip has a straight section at an offset angle. This makes the knife a useful utility and cooking tool around camp.Fourth, is the short 3.75" blade length. This is just the length of the average finger, which has proven perfect for the pencil grip favored by many hunters. Finally, the Onion Skinner features a handle which has a deep finger choil, which greatly improves grip in slippery conditions. The thin cross section allows for less obtrusive carry while still locking in the fitted sheath. So here is Ken's ultimate skinner. Field-tested for five years, and finally ready for production and your own field test.Specifications:Blade Length: 3.75" (95.25 mm)Edge: PlainSteel: Böhler K110Blade Finish: SatinBlade Thickness: 0.142" (3.61 mm)Grind: High HollowOpen Length: 8" (203.2 mm)Weight: 3.7 oz (104.89g)Handle: Double Injection PP/TPR w/ Textured GripStyle: Fixed Blade Knife with SheathSheath Material: LeatherSheath Weight: 2.1 oz (59.53g)

Best EDC kife I have ever had.

*by R***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2016*

I bought one of these for myself last year and was so impressed with it that I purchased two more for my sons, My wife wanted to know why she was the only one without one, so........The blade is full hollow ground giving it a rather fine edge. The steel is quite tough, has never chipped, can be sharpened to razor sharpness, and keeps an edge well. It is easy to sharpen if you don't let it get real dull, which I never do. It is very flat and fits in my front pocket of loose pants without getting in the way or showing. The blade has enough rocker in it to be useful as a kitchen knife, makes a good camp food prep knife, and I have used it to breast out some big birds. All in all this is my EDC knife. it isn't perfect for anything, it is darn good for most everything, and a couple swipes on a diamond hone keeps it razor sharp.

    Awesome knife, better price

*by F***2 on Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2016*

I have to admit I was excited about the concept of this knife, its design being a multiple year adaptation from Alaskan guides with super hard Böhler K110, 58-60 HRC semi-stainless tool steel for a blade? OK, I'll bite, I ordered one just before heading out on my annual mule deer hunting trip. The knife arrived on time and the package wasn't damaged in any way. As I unpacked the knife from its box my initial impression was that the knife was plain, oddly shaped and the handle was longer than the short fat blade. The handle is rubberized, a little on the thin side at about 3/8" thick. It's depth and length are perfect as far as my hand goes but I have large hands. The knife comes with a leather sheath and a hand loop. As other reviewers have stated the sheath has a tiny plastic sleeve toward the bottom half on the inside. You can get the blade between the plastic and the leather if you put the knife in just right but it doesn't seem to hurt anything, it's just slightly annoying. I left the hand loop tassel off as I find things like that fairly irritating.I've decided after holding this knife a few times the thinness of the handle isn't a bad thing, it feels plenty sturdy enough and my weight hasn't been enough to snap it by sitting with it in my back pocket. The pattern on the handle is simple and yet highly effective for reducing slippage, the clear trade off being that it's a pain to get clean once blood has accumulated on it.As far as the blade is concerned, the high hollow grind is a nice touch, it's sharp, really sharp. It has an odd dropping slope to the tip of the knife with a decently fine point. After using it to clean and process a couple of game animals I have to say I'm impressed, I deliberately wasn't nice to this knife. It skinned a deer flawlessly, the drop point works amazing for getting under skin but not into the meat. After hammering it through a brisket and all the other processing, this thing is still just as sharp as when I pulled it out of the box. It is semi-stainless though which means it will marr the finish on the steel if your not slightly careful with it, i.e. don't put it away wet or dirty. My only complaint is I'm not sure I like the forced angles the sheath makes you wear the knife at if you put it on your belt. Compared to the rest of the product I figured it was irrelevant. I will be buying more of these for Christmas gifts. I fully recommend trying one of the knives, especially if you're a hunter, they're an amazing deal.

GoTo Game Knife in my Kit

*by J***I on Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2015*

Purchased as my game-processing knife to accompany my ProTool Camp Utility knife in my camping/hiking kit. Very impressed with:1) knife design. It fits PERFECTLY in my hand, it is well balanced and perfectly sized.2) knife construction. The grip sticks to my hand. I tested it with wet hands and the grip seemed to stick even better. UNK how the grip will react to blood or gore. I appreciate the included leather halyard that is sized to fit over the wrist, even if wearing gloves.3) scabbard. quality leather with a plastic insert. The knife is VERY securely held and is canted for comfort regardless where you choose to carry.
