It can be put over the headboard of the bed and be secured between the headboard and the wall, or under the mattress on the side. It looks simple but it's well made. I know it is something you would expect to see in a dorm or something, but in our 1-bedroom apartment, our bed is in the corner so only one side gets to have a night stand.
