    Easily digestible and practicable tips for living and moving well

Movement is medicine! I’ve read all of the Starrett’s books and this one does not disappoint. They describe it as a prequel to there other books and I would agree. BASL is incredibly informative and gives detail  explanation of movements and mobilisations but it isn’t the easiest read for your average person looking to move more and move better. Built to Move on the other hand is very easy to read and easy to apply, split into 10 chapters which describe 10 specific habits or “vital signs” with easily carried out protocols that you can fit into your day without being overwhelmed. It really is a guide to moving and living better.As a society as a whole we don’t move enough and this gem of a book will help you understand how to move more, eat better, sleep better, and just feel better as a whole. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and already plan to give it as a gift to a few family members who dare I say probably could use it.

I bought this book and then put it to one side and thought to myself -I will read that when my back feels a little better-I had been suffering for months with a low back problem and exercising, walking, chiropractors and physio did not solve it.I took the book on holiday (where I was finding even swimming hurt my back) and after reading all my holiday novels, thought I'll start this!Well - what a revelation, I started immediately trying the basic exercises and in particular the 'couch stretch' somehow relieved my back almost instantly. It was not a miracle cure as such but the relief I felt was measurable after so many months of pain. I couldnt believe that Id left the book on the shelf and paid for expensive appointments.I preserved with the daily plan and saw further improvement slowly and steadily and did about 3 sets a day in those first few weeks.After about 3 months I joined the app and use about 10 of the hip/back exercises, a couple of times a week.My back isn't perfect but its 99 percent there and all of the other hints and tips included (like floor sitting, squatting etc) all really help.I learned from this book about my psoas (and I think this is where my trouble was located) no one else had told me about this.I think I could get a lot more from the app, but I am hoping to re-read the book again this summer to remind me of all the hints and tips again.Really grateful that I have found this book and certainly recommend it.

    Important advice if lacking a bit of serious and detailed insight

I picked this book up after listening to Kelly doing the rounds on the “bro science” podcasts - his one with Tim Ferris is very good. Kelly is clearly someone with a huge amount of knowledge of the body. Becoming a Supple Leopard is still one high on many recommendation lists years later.Boiling this book down into a sentence would be that the more we move, the more mobile we are - which is not a bad predictor of life expectancy. The authors give hints of many studies showing how certain diet, nutrition and sleep is all playing a huge combinatory role in health, pain and longevity.The biggest takeaways I got from the book are suggestion on pushing joints to the edge of their current mobility, which will increase range of movement and mobility further.The biggest disagreement I have with the book is a bit of a condescension the authors give to stretching and yoga/Pilates. They might be right that further specific exercises help (like well as myofascial release) but a lot of excercises they gave look like stretches to me. I get huge benefits from 30 minutes stretching sessions every few days. So that I found a bit odd.Overall I found the book a decades worth of a brain dump on everything like breathing, diet, sleep etc. All the other books and authors like James Nestor and Matthew Walker get their deserved references.This is all very high quality information in this book and has inspired me to push my “mobilisation” (cough stretches) further. It is great value for money and money well spent lex.But I struggle to give it 5 stars because it is a bit too casual in its writing style, could do with more detailed advice and does not feel like it will still be in the shelf in 5-10 years, unlike Becoming a Supple Leopard.
