So, nothing more appropriate than praise her masterly interpretations of Mozart, Chopin and Schumann piano concertos, gathered on the recordings she made for Deutsche Grammophon during the last three decades. Paired by various elite orchestras –Chamber Orchestra of Europe (4), Wiener Philharmoniker (2), Orchestra Mozart (2), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1), Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg (1), Berliner Philharmoniker (1) under reputed maestros of the baton such as the legendary Claudio Abbado (who accompanies her in no less than 8 concertante works) or Andre Previn, Frans Bruggen andr Emmanuel Krivine– the Portuguese virtuoso displays a varied spectra of artistic skills in order to grasp the utter gamut of moods and ideas put in the scores by the above named icons among the classic-romantic composers.Some could prefer the romantic flavour of both Chopin’s concertos which are superbly played here, with natural restrain and simplicity, favouring smooth turns and lyrical touch. Others could go with Pires’s supremely Mozartean insight. Her recent account of the concertos nos. 20 & 27 achieved under late Abbado conducting Mozart orchestra are samples of mature, mellow musical conception, while the vivid nos. 21 & 23 breathe a youthful inspiration and playfulness. When it comes to Schumann, his romantic concerto in A minor receives from Pires a seductive meditative approach even in the most ardent virtuosic passages.All in all, this box set is a welcome amount of recordings to testify for the unparalleled craftsmanship of a major artist in the classical music today at her peak of creativity – the luminary Maria Joao Pires! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A nice set. Although it has a strong competence in the Moravec account and in the Gulda set. The Eschenbach album are renditions not to miss, as well. Gulda is a landmark in what Mozart concerns. But the Moravec album (with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields), and the Eschenbach one are both excellent and different outlooks. These concerts rank, with her Schubert, among the best MJ. Pires ever recorded. Her Mozart is in fact, a famous one. She is outstanding, with her warm and sensitive playing, resulting in heartfelt performances. Loved so much her Schubert Impromptus that decided to have this set, knowing how much praised was also her Mozart. It's a quite romantic approach difficult not to like, and Abbado and his Orchestra are a perfect partner. With Fortepiano You have the excellent Van Immersel survey.
