## Description

Principles of Economics: 9781305585126: Economics Books @ desertcart.com

Review: Excellent Textbook!!! - I bought this book to better understand "the economy." I'll be honest, I was completely ignorant. I was a biology major in college and never took a single class in humanities or business. At 35 years old, I'm realizing how big of a mistake that was. Nonetheless, this is an AMAZING textbook! After reading each chapter and doing every single practice problem and quiz, I now know economics better than, I would say, 99% of the population--that's speculation, of course, and maybe even a bit exaggerated but, hopefully, you get what I'm saying. Enlightened doesn't begin to describe the way I feel. I honestly feel like I know how the world works; it's even allowed me to better understand how the media--as well as those in politics--have no idea what they are doing; and how "good intentions" can sometimes have disastrous outcomes. The biggest thing this book helped me realize, though, is that so many of us go around thinking we know way more than we actually do. (I was most certainly one of those people.) Incentives are very real; the law of supply and demand is very real; and the only way for any of us to truly understand how the world works and how we can "fix" it, first and foremost, we must educate ourselves. This book is an excellent starting point!!! Last words: I think EVERYONE should read both a philosophy textbook (to better understand from where our values and principles come) and an economics textbook (to better understand how the world works--as opposed to how we *think* it works).
Review: The Encyclopædia Britannica of Economics - This is probably the best introductory book in economics out there. Being a very technical field, books in economics can be too technical (textbooks) or too simple (light reads). This is the perfect mix between the two. Not too technical, not too light. It’s the most popular introductory textbook in top US universities. In the title of this review, I called it the Encyclopædia Britannica of Economics because you can pretty much find anything here: - Basic Principles - Equilibrium Analysis - Market Efficiency - Market Failures (Externalities, Public Goods, and Imperfect Competition) - Government Failures (Public Choice) - Macroeconomic Data - Growth Theory - Financial Sector - Monetary Economics - International Economics - Business Cycles - Monetary and Fiscal Policy It’s all in here. A final warning note. Gregory Mankiw has three “principles” textbooks: - Principles in Economics (this book) - Principles in Microeconomics - Principles in Macroeconomics There’s a big overlap between the three. In particular, there’s nothing on the last two that is not on the first one. Therefore, if you own the first one, you don’t need any of the other two.
