The album cover has caused a great deal of controversy mainly from the politically correct types and pro life groups, being banned form several stores in North America as well as being banned from Germany completely until 2006 (and yet the original cover for the Scorpion's Virgin Killer was acceptable there, ain't that something?). It was the cover art alone that drew me into buying this cd back in 03 when it was pretty much unheard of. I'll admit I expected something brutal in a more modern vibe and I was kind of lulled with the guitar intro of "Meat Hook Sodomy" on my very first listen as the guitars were really thin for what I was used to, but the moment Chris's growls kicked in I thought "Man this guy literally sounds like a beast", and I was blown away ever since, and I have fallen in love with the buzzsaw guitars and blastbeats. Sure it's all thin compared to what's out there today, but remember this is death metal circa 1991, nothing but chainsaw riffs and lyrics that match up to a B grade horror film. The second track "Gutted" is one of my favorites and is definitely a staple in Cannibal Corpses' history. It starts with a riff that is comparable to the intro of Slayer's "Piece by Piece", and from there it has epic riffs and blastbeats and even one of the most epic breakdowns that give you that chainsaw feel. The album goes on with the insanity that is "Living Dissection" and a beautiful guitar intro of "Under The Rotted Flesh". Another highlight on this album is "Vomit The Soul" with Glen Benton lending some of his vocals, making it sound like a nightmare. The title track is some more good ol insanity with epic breakdowns and this time with dualing guitars. Near the end the album doesn't slow down at all with "Rancid Amputation" and ends with the thrashing to pieces "Innards Decay", by the end it slows into an epic doomy atmosphere with Chris growling like a demon as if he just got his last victim. Overall if you're a fan of Cannibal Corpse or extreme music... well I'm assuming you already own this, but in case you haven't gotten around to picking this up DO IT!!!
