It is plastic and I doubt it will last forever like the metal Jinhaos will but it wrote smoothly from the beginning and felt nice in my hand. So much thinner and lighter than the x750's. The "chrome" accents are just shiny silver plastic so they might show the wear first. It is a good starter pen for someone wanting to try out fountain pens for the first time. The piston was smooth from the start. I haven't paid more than $30 yet for a single fountain pen (I've bought about 30 in the last 6 months looking for the perfect pen) and some of those Lamy pens required tuning of the nib before they wrote smoothly but the Jinhao all were perfect from the start..... there is a chance that some of the zLamy's aren't authentic Lamy's so I won't fault that company. Give this a pen a try. It is fun, smooth and cheap enough that if you lose it or give it away you can afford to replace it. The nib is a little beefier than I tend to like (I think it's a medium and I like a fine), but for $8, who cares? The ink took a little longer than anticipated to start flowing, but once it did, this became a great pen that easily keeps up with my Parkers and Twisbi. I might not ever spend more than $8 for a pen again. You probably shouldn't either, now that you know this one is out there! I'm probably going to pick up a couple more just to keep some extra colors loaded! What else is there to say? It's a Jinhao, which (IMO) translates to value pricing and a good performing instrument. This smaller pen should not be underestimated. It's pretty to look at, leaves a wet enough line, and just writes really smoothly. The nib writes just a touch to the side, which is more in line with my preference. If you're expecting a japanese , this isn't it. Think more japanese , but not as far as a western . These are so cheap, how can you not have one in every color? Cheap enough as giveaways, or when teaching a younger writer about fountain pens. BTW.... There's an o-ring where the barrel and section thread together. It looks like this could work out for an eyedropper style conversion.
