The backing plates screw onto the output shaft. The output shaft protrudes slightly from a plastic protective cover. A 3 inch backing plate would fit but it would be smaller than the protective cover. Therefore the advantage of a smaller backing plate ie getting into smaller areas would be lost due to the larger protective cover.
