I have a 78 lb. female lab and got this to give extra support for her hind leg. I bought the medium size. Measure your dog's leg per directions. She was hesitant to put any weight on her back leg. The vet thought it could be a torn ACL. The fact is, I was not going to pay $4000 + for surgery. Instead, I paid for the expensive pain pills that helped take down inflammation in the joint and bought the rear hock joint brace. For my dog, it made a real difference. My dog is much better and usually puts full weight on her leg now without it. Occasionally I put it back on if she strains herself running after a squirrel. When I was using the brace, I only put it on her for part of the day when we were home. **Q: Do you think this brace would help my 16lb poodle with an acl tear?** A: My 20 lb. Bichon had a rear hock acl tear. It was bad enough that there was joint instability and he walked using three paws. I put a brace on him that was identical to this one and it helped to stabilize the joint and eventually led to weight bearing on the affected paw. Now (6-7 months later) he uses the paw at about 80 % of normal and no longer uses the brace. This isn't scientific evidence that the brace helped heal the tear but it seemed to make him more comfortable while it was healing. I also gave him glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate supplements and the vet gave him truprofen for pain and inflammation. The only alternative to this is to hire an orthopedic veterinary surgeon to do an acl repair costing thousands of dollars. Good luck.
