I did not want to tear out the stairs but was looking for a different way to stain the stairs. I thought the Homestead would make a great alternative to regular stains and it has definitely worked as hoped. the dye penetrated the old wood and has lasted about one year without need for further staining. The walnut is very dark but has hid many of the old imperfections and there were no fumes coming out after application. I think this is a great option for old wood, esp stairs. I've tried it on a few other things like toddler chairs and no smells, quick drying and beautiful colors are the outcome. I only ended up using 1 package and still have some mixed dye left in a sealed jar, so a little goes a long ways. Dye was mixed with 2 quarts water as directed, and applied with a foam brush. First coat was sanded back to highlight grain, and two final coats applied. The dye is very easy to work with, and easy to get good results with.
