I have no clue why they're sold at such a premium as they are a very simple device and are not something I would buy as a necessity. The truth is they are a luxury. I can stop the sun washing out my shot by holding a piece of cardboard over my camera lens and that does the exact same job as a 'French flag' I can buy screw on filters for my lens and they are much cheaper than the slide in type. But it does make these things more easier and more professional looking but lets be honest here ... We really buy a matt box because it makes your camera look bad ass. And on that score it does the job very nicely.
