Someone put the lid on too hard causing the battery holding lid to come loose and drop into the trash bag. After that, the batteries wouldn't stay tightly in. One day the batteries drop out again, but my 82 yro father put the batteries in backwards and caused it to overheat and you could smell an electrical burnt smell. I put the batteries back in correctly but it never worked after that. We loved using this trash can so much that we immediately bought another one. The new one is a bit larger and four (4) AA batteries instead of just two (2) so has a bigger battery lid cover. On the former one, the batteries lasted nearly a yr. I decided to take a strip of duct tape and tape the battery door lid so it wouldnt drop in the trash bag again.
