## Overview

The Raspberry Pi HAT 32 I/O Port Expander (HAT32IOPE) by Nation Electronics is a compact, stackable expansion board featuring two MCP23017 chips that deliver 32 digital I/O ports controlled via I2C. Designed for Raspberry Pi models A+, B+, 2B, and 3B, it supports up to 4 stacked boards for a total of 128 I/O ports. With selectable I2C addresses, 5V tolerant inputs/outputs, and flexible power options including back-power isolation, this HAT is engineered for scalable, safe, and versatile Raspberry Pi projects.

## Description

The Raspberry PI HAT - 32 I/O Ports Expander (HAT32IOPE) board is a 32 Input/Output digital expansion board designed for use on the Raspberry Pi A+, Raspberry Pi B+, Raspberry Pi 2 Model B, and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. The board use two Microchip MCP23017 16-bit I/O expander, allowing you to connect up to 32 digital inputs or outputs to the Raspberry Pi. The HAT32IOPE is connected to Raspberry Pi using a 20x2 GPIO connector with extended pins that allow you to stack many extension boards in a single Raspberry Pi. You can select the I2C address using the on-board 3bits switches (ON=0 the pin is grounded, OFF=1 the pin is pull up to 5V). The MCP23017 supports up to 8 different I2C: Due to there are two MCP23017 per board you are allowed to stack up to four HAT32IOPE boards on a single Raspberry Pi for a maximum of 128 I/O ports. The right angle headers allow you to connect the I/Os while the boards are stacked. The HAT32IOPE may be powered thru a 5V input polarized male connector (now on a right angle connector, female cable to connect external supply included) or thru the Raspberry Pi GPIO 5V pins. If you use the first option you can power the Raspberry Pi shorting the "Back PWR" jumper or isolate the Pi and HAT32IOPE keeping it open. In order to power the HAT32IOPE thru the Raspberry Pi GPIO 5V pins the "Back PWR" jumper must be shorted. Use of an external supply is recommended when you connect more than one HAT32IOPE boards to your Raspberry Pi. Specifications: -Vdd (5V polarized input header without BACK PWR): 4.5V - 5.5V -All digital inputs and outputs: 0 - Vdd -Maximum current on a single I/O Pin (sourced or sunk): 25 mA -Maximum current on each MCP23017 chip: 125 mA

## Features

- 32 Digital Inputs/Outputs, based on the Microchip MCP23017 chip
- Control via the Raspberry Pi I2C port, selectable I2C addresses thru switches
- Stackable, up to 4 boards per Raspberry Pi, right angled headers for ease connection when stacked
- All I/Os are 5V tolerant, built in 3.3V to 5V shifter for Raspberry Pi I2C port protection
- Raspberry Pi can be Back Powered or isolated thru a jumper, The board can be powered thru the Raspberry Pi GPIO 5V pins, or thru a 5V polarized input header from an external supply

Close to a perfect device for Rasperry PI, but disappointing documentation and lack of .NET support

*by M***R on Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2017*

I was very excited to get my hands on these boards, but I was kind of disappointed with their documentation for Windows 10 IoT or lack thereof..I purchased first IO extender, which came as a kit to be assembled (all components in a box). After assembling it, which took a couple of hours, with having no documentation about the positioning of the components on the board and watching only the provided pictures on NationElectronics web site, I discovered that it works only if I set it on address 0x26 and 0x27. If I was setting it up to anything else, the board will recognize both devices as they were on the same address.I thought I did something wrong while soldering it, so I went and purchased another one, this time an already assembled IO extender board. To my surprise, this one works correctly.I event took the time to test every single combination of addresses. They all work very well.My only issue with Nation Electronics is that they have no support for Windows 10 IoT, no documentation about how to create a .NET app with this device and they provide no .NET libraries for this device. On their site it is saying the C# examples will come soon, but a month later and still nothing.I had to do a lot of internet digging until I found a good library, which I enhanced to allow writing on any Output pin, while preserving the other pins.Anyway, long story short, with the second board working as advertised, I am pleased with their product.I also emailed the customer service and they answered within 24 hours.I recommend the board, but if you are not versatile with soldering, don't buy the one send as a kit.

    Nicely made board

*by K***D on Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2018*

Nicely made board. The schematic shows that they have taken the time to move out all the goodies from the chips to accessible pins. My only fault would be that if you are using 10 mm standoffs on the Raspberry Pi, the board is just a little higher off the standoff, requiring a washer to have a firm mechanical connection. Also, the output T2 is very close to the second set of USB ports on an RPi3 and the 5 v input T3 requires you to connect prior to screwing the board down on standoffs because it hides behind the first set of UBS ports on an RPi3. I got the assembled model, have not had a chance to check it out completely software wise.

Excellent product. Works as described. I used two of them to add some extra I/O.
