Rabbits, chipmunks, birds and the occasional fox are great fun, too, but nothing excites him like squirrels. I have a dog tolerant park across the street, which has an abundance of oak trees as well as concomitant squirrels. I let him burn energy by running after the squirrels on a 26' Flexi Freedom leash, and he often takes a 50' run at them.In the past, this has resulted in a number of broken leather collars, which was not only expensive, but resulted in a dog running loose with no tags. To prevent that, I've resorted to using two collars. His full time Perri leather dress collar holds his tags. The second goes on with his leash.At first, I tried a standard chain collar for its strength, but wasn't too happy with that as the dog dislikes having a collar placed over his head and, worse, the chain is hard on his neck when he hits the end of the leash running full speed (something he has learned to avoid most of the time, but not always).Standard martingale collars alleviated the later somewhat, but not his aversion to having a collar placed over his head. Regular snap on collars were okay, but unless I make them tighter than I prefer, they tend to slide over his small Whippet-like head when he decides to back up.I finally found these, which are exactly what I wanted. They are pricey, but seem to be very well made and likely to last a long time. They snap on quickly and smoothly (not all snap-ons do), and fit him comfortably.As someone mentioned, they do seem to run a bit large. At its minimum circumference, the small size does not squeeze my 21 lb. dog's 12-1/2 inch neck (indeed, the collar measures nearly 13 inches at its smallest setting by my calculation), but it also does not slide over his head, so it is fine for my purposes. I have no doubt they'd serve very well as an everyday collar for those with more conventional needs as well, but you might need a size smaller than you think. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Awesomeness *by S***E on July 1, 2014* My sharpei/boxer/lab/corgi mix has a long neck, wide at the bottom, very narrow at the top and his head is not much bigger around than the narrowest part. He has slipped every collar he's ever had on and also slipped harnesses by backing away and slipping his front legs out...and he's fast as a striking snake. I needed a collar that didn't have to be so tight he couldn't breathe and yet not slip over his head. I got this collar and loved the quality right away. It can be loose enough to rest at the bottom of his neck and yet draw just enough when he pulls on it to stop before he can slip the rest of his head out. Tonight he stuck his head in a hedge and a cat jumped out. He tried to chase it and then bucked like a horse trying to back out of the collar. He weighs 55 pounds and looked like a bucking bronco and pretty sure I looked like the cowboy getting tossed around holding on to the other end of the leash. My husband saw it and said it would have been a great video to show how great this collar works. If you get one be sure to measure the 3 places, just like the photos show and you'll get a perfect fit. It's adjustable and holds the adjustment and I really love the quick release. Be sure when you adjust it to the spot right behind the ears that the two rings just touch but don't overlap. It's perfect and I highly recommend it. NOT a choke collar. *by M***M on December 19, 2014* This well made collar is ideal for a dog whose head is not much bigger than its neck. If you are walking a dog with a small head and it stops while you continue forward, a standard collar can slip right over the dog's head.This collar is designed to be loose on the neck when the dog is not pulling on the leash. It snugs up when the dog pulls. When the collar is correctly adjusted, the chain pulls as the dog pulls. The chain stops pulling when the fabric ends of the collar touch. This great design limits the amount of pressure on the neck. But it keeps the collar snug enough to prevent a dog from slipping out of the collar.If your neighbors misunderstand the collar and think you have a choke collar I recommend the version of this collar without the quick release. This alternate version of the collar works in exactly the same way but the chain on the quick release collar is replaced with fabric on the collar without the quick release.
