The cord comes out on the left side of the unit( not the back), we did have to cut away part of our frame, as the cord is about 3 1/3 inches out, our frame was 2x4, so about 1/2 an inch removed. I feel it brightens up the room and I love how I can customize the color of the gems and flames. We also have the choice of log insert, but we liked the crystals.
